Principle of operation:
Helicobacter pylori produces the enzyme urease, which breaks down urea into carbon dioxide and ammonia. The generated carbon dioxide is absorbed into the bloodstream and subsequently exhaled. By using the naturally stable C13 isotope, the 13CO2 produced from the breakdown of C13-urea can be measured in the exhaled air.
