How can coagulation testing help with COVID-19 patients?
There have been numerous publications noting haemostatic changes in COVID-19 patients. This has resulted in new guidelines from BSH, Thrombosis UK and ISTH for management of COVID-19 patients in the last couple of weeks. Other publications of particular note include:
▪ Coag screen and D-dimer appear to be helpful in diagnosis, assessment of disease and monitoring treatment.
▪ Use of heparin, and mainly LMWH and Fondaparinux may be beneficial to COVID-19 patients with proven coagulopathy.
▪ Visco-elastic testing could be useful for bleeding management. Closed systems such as Quantra are preferable due the reduced risk of aerolisation.
